Firefly rudder
Firefly rudder
Does anyone know if it is in the class rules to have a fixed "spoon shaped" rudder on an early Firefly or must it be lifting?

Re: Firefly rudder
My School Firefly "Daybreak" (Given to the school by Peter Scott & Keith Shackleton.) she is incidentally still in good nick and used regularly, which was certainly of the age of yours (Sorry I forget her name.) had a fixed rudder and I stand to be corrected but I think fixed rudders were original. The Firefly in the museum in Denmark has a fixed rudder, but since its not as old as claimed proves, not a lot.
Simples.
Re: Firefly rudder
Yup, I have got a fixed Firefly spoon in the workshop somewhere.
At one stage I had 3 Fairey fixed rudders (Firefly, 14, Jollyboat) and they were all exactly the same but each one scaled up/down versions of the others.

Re: Firefly rudder
See the attached photo. I have found a glass Jollyboat which I hope to restore in the future. This rudder was with the Jollyboat, but it does not match the rudder I have seen in photos on your website. Can you tell me whether it is a Jollyboat rudder? Thanks, Steve Mason, Chipley, Florida, USA.

Re: Firefly rudder
might of been better in a new thread this....but...
yes....it is a Jollyboat rudder.
the original was a spoon....
then they allowed another design....this one....
but you had to choose between one or the other.
Then...possibly....finally...maybe....the rules were freed to allow any shape of rudder.
If you want more details, I can give them.....we do know the name of the designer for the new rudder shape - this one.
you may find more details on the Jollyboat blogsite at http://www.cvrda.org/jollyboat/
