New Build - OT really...

Post by JimC »

I know its a new build, so OT, but I couldn't resist sharing this lovely bit of wood bashing...

Image

Its a Farr 3.7, a New Zealand trapeze singlehander, and incidentally a close relative to my CVDRA Cherub...

Hi Jim

have there been 'any' wood cherubs built in last few year?

I wonder what other dev classes are still building competitive wooden boats.

ICs of course.....

Swift Solo? (supposed to be two in the UK - anybody seen one?)

Incidentally the Farr looks real nice.....but somehow a bit 'dated'. Is that me....or is that why we like it even?

cheers

Have you seen Keith Callaghan's new Merlin? It's the one I'd have liked to bring home from the Dinghy Show!

Last I know of (proper wood as opposed to ply sandwich) was about 1996 or 1997. Coincidentally it was built by the guy who built the first foam sandwich Cherub in the UK in 1970... How I would love to find that one!

Don't forget the USA Classic Moth. I think every National Championships since the class was resurrected in the early 90's has been won by a wooden boat (Our hull weight min is 75 lbs. and 3 mm. ply is the building material of choice). And our vintage division is all wood as that was all there was before 1950.

One can get a feel for the enormous variety of designs within this class from this YouTube video.
