No undercoat.....- this was a lie! I need help!

Post by Nessa »

......so presumably no primer either: Marauder K45 has only a thin coat of black paint, some of which is peeling gratifyingly, some of which is clinging on like a leech to a toddler's plump leg. Why is this? Was undercoat etc not 'invented' when this boat was built, or is this simply lazy boat building?

As stated, some of the paint is coming off like sun burnt skin, but some clings on - is there a best way of removing the remnants without damaging the ply underneath and also given its presumed age?

(Sorry about all the similes: I am having a Keatsian morning here in the fertile Fens)

There may have been some transaprent primer but it sounds more likely that the old finish (varnish?) was rubbed down and then painted over. Any grime or greasy surface not removed will be a solid key for paint which may be why it is coming off in patches. It could also be that it simply is not compatable with the old finish so moves at a different rate causing dramatic peeling. I've seen this on several boats.

If it is really flakey you might get most of it of by scraping. Chisel, old plane iron, piece of glass or 'proper' scaper . Then I would try a hot air gun but take care not to scorch the timber. Paint strippers should work on whats left. Nitromors is quicker but very potent. There is a more eco-friendly stripper available too which I have used and like. It is a white cream and doesn't dry out like nitromors but takes much much longer to work. It can even be left overnight but may take more than one application. Unlike nitromors it doesn't wet the timber and is not caustic so is much kinder to the timber. I used it inside my albacore as nitromors didn't seem to get through some of the old finish. I applied the stripper, threw a sheet of polythene over and came back the next morning. You can work on a very large area ( I did one half of the hull at a go.) I like it but it needs to be used quite differently to nitromors.
I just can't remeber it's name though!!!
You can use a nylon scrubbing brush or nylon scourer to get into the grain.

Would love to know what it was?

the only ones that I have used have been less than totally effecitve....but I know there are some other new ones that I have not tried.

I also think I most probably need to re-address my technique in view of what you were suggesting.

anything that prevents using Nitromors....has to be a good thing.

cheers

While it was true that in some parts there was only thin black paint, closer inspection with a scraper has shown there is a thick layer of primer/undercoat under most of the paint, and I am having the devil's own job getting it off. The heat gun is pretty ineffective. Am I going to have to resort to Nitromors?

I have read glowing reports of http://www.stripperspaintremovers.com/ but I can't remember where.... I just bookmarked the page for reference. My search for the elusive walnut shells in the u.k. has just about run out of steam - shame since I have a blast cleaning pot and compressor waiting to be used - I even had two old mirror dinghies waiting to be test cases before I tried it on any of my boats. They have had to go to make room for winter storage and I will be back to stripping chemicals and hot air this winter....

I have been using nitromors this afternoon. It gets the black topcoat off fairly easily, then I need a second application (or possibly third, not got that far yet) to get rid of the grey stuff underneath. I suppose this is par for the course. I had forgotten I had to go through all this when I first stripped the phantom....
