best way to remove two pot varnish?

Post by charl1019 »

Help

I've recently bought an old solo in bit of a state, needs stripping back to bare wood then re-varnishing. Problem being I've realised the boat is coated in two pot varnish under the newer, but poorly applied, one pot varnish.

Whats the best way to remove the two pot?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The same way as one-pot....

just takes longer

tons of stuff written on this....

but start with hot-air gun.....then nitromors.....with lots of scraping.

you have to experiment and see what works best. Some two-packs come off best with heat....others with chemicals.

Some don't really come off with anything easily....

I have tons of scraping ahead of me and am therefore investing in blaster and walnuts shells

Very good AG, but my education was behind yours.. (I had to google Damascene, to find out the meaning) - Some of us were not trained in the classics!!!... ;)

Well I think it was the St James (And other versions too.) Bible which whilst a classic in itself is not classics per se.

Yeah, OK I have just shown my ignorance. But, I would claim in my defence that I investigated what it meant!!!

Back to the original thread, I donn't feel that I can add much more, Blood, Sweat, Tears, Nitomors, Heatgun, Skarsten scraper, etc...

Good luck...

Like those in the UK the road to Damascus is likely so full of potholes a U-turn is the only option.

Too hot and dusty in Damascus to get a good finish :)

Just to point out it is currently 10 degrees and raining in Damascus, so not much dust.

Still not a good finish, though...

I tend to use a hot air blower, a triangular scraper and then sand back with 60 or 80 grit on a random orbit sander. Trouble with nitromors is that you spend all that time drying the boat out, only to get it wet again. But, as Ed says, 2 pot can be a pain in the wotsits to remove, so try anything you can lay your hands on!

Chaps please. The man asked how to remove varnish he didnt want a discussion on the road to Damascus and grammer. Please by all means take this to the banter section and continue it there.

ps I did find it quite amusing though.
