Pink or purple paint

Post by Nessa »

Ye olde phantome menace is due for its overhaul and I want to do something cute with the paint job. I can't find pink or purple gloss anywhere. Does it exist? I have seen pink and purple boats. I don't want to do spray stuff because I can't do it myself!

A lot of the more exotic coloured boats are done with car paint which is
a) best sprayed and
b) too brittle for older wooden boats.
I have known people mix paint for that special colour, but of course you'll never be able to repeat it...

I have been looking on the Jotun site. They do all sorts of good colours but I can't work out which paint is available in which colour, so I have emailed them to ask. At least my somewhat bimbo request should brighten their day....

Ed you might even remember this....

We did "The Happiest Days of your life" as a school play in 1969. Joyce Grenfell played the part of Miss Gossage the Sports mistress in the film.

One of the lines she has recalls her school colours: Purple and Puce.

I'm not going to tell you how I know that, the whole story might come back to haunt me. (Now there is a challenge Davidh. Investigative journalism that could uncover something fit for Sunday morning!  )

Can't say that I do.....

but I have had 3 boats in this colour range....

A Merlin (mr2900) which was painted half lilac and half light green....looked as bad as it sounds

Something was purple....I can't remember what.....but the old can of paint is still in the workshop....most probably the Tideway.

And then of course the Jollyboat is very definitely Puce!

Somehow, I have to admit that these colours do look better in my head than they did on the boat!!

The 'purple' was best I think.

Well, respect to Shepherd Marine of South Cerney (Rupert territory). Their chap Malcolm got back to me last night telling me I can use all their colours (which are wonderful) and also suggesting an undercoat to match. Good old fashioned customer service via the web - what we all want!

Nessa,

at the risk of incuring wrath for returning to poetry on this forum, just remember

"When I am old I shall wear purple"

But for your info - when Contender K505 (Keith Pauls old boat) was rebuilt last year in the Ridge workshop, that was spray lilac and looked superb out afloat

Pink is easy 25% fire engine red, 75% white. Check one of the Solo threads for the results

Neil,

Back in the 'good old days' you did not even need to mix pink! Anyone remember the 'go fast' paint finish that came out in pink..... Bob Fisher painted his Fireball in it - 'Pink Plymouth' if I recall. Not sure if you went any quicker in a boat painted with the stuff (the ads said you did) but it was 'hard on the eye'!

Yes the original Smoothy they soon brought out a white version. Still have a can of white in the garage ready to do up the next posh boat would n't want to waste it on the Finn.

There were three paints that were available like this 'Smoothy' 'Go fast white' and of course good old 'Graphspeed'. I never tried Smoothy, the pink one, but the other two were fine as long as you could put up with looking either like a Homepride flour grader or a chimney sweep when you rubbed them down.

The chap at Sheppards did me a lovely Violet for Pippa's boat. Good paint, too. Go for purple, not pink, I think...
