random orbital sander

Post by Nessa »

today is my birthday and her indoors is treating me to a new sander! I quite fancy this one:

but I failed physics so have no idea what all the jargon means. What is important is that it is light - given the forthcoming meccano-isation of my hand - and good for boat sanding. If there are other better ones out there, not over £100, please could I be advised?

Many thanks.

I've always found the Bosch ones to be good, too, and light enough to use one handed if necessary. Not used DeWalt, but other tools of their's have been good. Avoid cheap ones - I've killed Homebase own brand, Erde, and others in no time.

Happy Birthday both....

its mine tomorrow!

Us saggitarians have to stick together you know!

A small quick thought about sanders......

Will you be OK with using them if your hands are dodgy???

I would think it was worth spending a bit more and trying to find one which is well damped.

I don't have too much problems with my hands.....but I have used some really crappy sanders and the bad ones vibrate so much that they can really hurt your hands.....sending them straight to sleep so they end up really numb.

don't know.....its just a thought

cheers

having had double carpal tunnel surgery this year I'd recommend the damped option.

the dewalt one is a lot more expensive on the screwfix site - this site has it in the clearance section. My consultant now thinks he will have to put a sliver of titanium ino the back of my hand to hold two bones together after the ligament failed to heal during its time in my many casts. This means I might as well give up doing right handed stuff for some time to come. So I need to train my left hand to do things like this, hence the emphasis on weight. Also hence me buying a better sander, so I can at least do some things, even if there will be some that are still too difficult.

I can't yet envisage how to manage a heat gun though - any suggestions?

Happy birthday one and all!

Heat gun - get someone else to do it... unless someone has designed one where the scraper is attached infront of the heat?

Sander too, probebly, as a boat takes a while to sand back 2 handed, even.

Mine's Bosch. Its done a lot of work. It has a handle opposite the main stem which I think is a very good thing.

I have a Sealey ER150 It is the rolls royce of random orbital sanders, dont know how much they are now but i have worked it hard for 14 years.
I use stick on discs from car refinishing suppliers they are much cheaper than the velcro ones.

Are there's something that's useful to know: I've also got through a couple of the velcro pads on the sander. Adhesive might be a better solution...
