rot?

Post by Nessa »

There is a mirror 14 up on ebay.

The seller has sent me these pics, I wonder if the panel could give a view on what they see and whether they think it better or worse than what I have! I know it's a big ask, but any views might be helpful:

Doesn't look too promising as a boat to have minimal work to get on the water, does it? I think you'd have 2 projects on your hands, with very little gained by sacrificing one boat for the good of the other, unless there is kit you are missing.

Black wood, unless it is ebony, or something similar, is usually an indication of terminal rot; looks like the bottom panels are probably past their sell by date, but, without soundinga nd poking and prodding, it is very hard to tell. Speaking professionally, and looking at the pictures, my advice would be, forget it.

Doesn't look good does it....

But you know you can never really tell unless you go and have a look yourself.....and for that matter a bit of a poke with a knife or awl to see if those bottom panels are totally shot.

I have seen panels that have looked absolutely black.....but when you wipe them you find the varnish is fine underneath. Now I am not saying that this will be the case.....only that the only way you will really be able to tell is if someone goes and has a look.

Where is it? Any cvrda-types close by?

Faversham. A four hour round trip for me, and with petrol being the price it is I can't justify it. If anyone is local and coiuld go and have a scrape I would be grateful.

The seller assures me the wood is not soft, but it looks pretty dire doesn't it...

It is the middle of the ply I'd be worried about, and under the floor stiffeners. Mind, my daughter's Puffin was black inside when I took the decks off, but after a couple of months drying it turned out there was very little rot, so you never can tell...

I have bid the minimum bid because it might be useful to have th trolley, cover rig etc for the French boat. I also happen to be sort of in the area this weekend....

If it is dire I shall burn it.

I thought it was worth a shot at £60, I would not have bid more, and we are down that way anyway. At the least I will have gained a trolley, cover, rig sails etc, all of which already has a designated use. (the French thing will be chief beneficiary) I am hoping to collect this Sunday, if the chap is about, so will post pics, good, bad or ugly, when I get it home.

Niks is sketching plans of a marauder shaped garden feature, mostly cos the cats just love crawling in and out of all the holes...that or we'll be celebrating Valentine's day with a bonfire...

No. The really cunning thing to do would be to get him to attend and then sit everyone down to watch a Swallows and Amazons DVD
Best wishes
