After all this work i am very pleased with the finished boat, i'm pretty sure she has lost weight.., she is definitely much fairer and is strong enough for others to be able to have a go without the immediate possibility of sinking...
am hoping to get to the june roadford meet so hope to be able to sail her reasonably by then.
cheers. Dan.

hi, cheers for the compliments.. rob, this one is a lowrider, built by john claridge in 92 or 93, one of the last plywood moths i think..certainly one of the last ones he built.. i reckon it is now 20 years old.. so it feels great to ressurect one of the final magnums for its birthday.. now its finished you can really see how etreme they were at that time.. truly the boat of maniacs..
anyway. the wind is howling outside my shed, and its time to see if any of my repairs goes bang.
i'm going for a sail!
will report back later.. on the sink or swim experience..
cheers. dan.

well..That was pretty poor.
got rigged, wind 5 gusting 6, really looking good, put it in the water , started to capsize it to finninsh rigging, forestay tension rope snapped, mast collapsed under boat breaking both spreaders.. k.o..
thankfully no other damage, that was the only bit of rope i havent replaced..
then. on the way home my van gearbox decides that from now on the only gear i have is 2nd, so a six mile drive home making funny noises and feeling a little sad.
the boat is ready too go again now wth a nice bit of fresh dyneema and some rebuilt spreaders, so as soon as i've found and fitted a new gearbox i can try again...
have a video of the moment too so when i get a chance will put it up and you can have a chuckle.
cheers. dan.

5 gusting 6 was very ambitious!

Sadly, this appears to be the way with old boats - especially very light ones. More time fixing than sailing, at least until everything is replaced!

yep, my moth is like that sail it - break it - sail it - break it......etc. What's worse for me is it's not usually me sailing it. I wouldn't have dared a five gusting six. At least it broke on shore, the carnage could have been much worse had it happened afloat.

Keep it going though, it will be worth it!

Ha cheers.. to be honest after the rebuild it should all be pretty bullet proof, literally in the case of the hull and its carbon kevlar skin.. it really was the only bit of rope i haven't replaced, however the spreaders were looking a little shabby,
5 gusting 6 was pretty much the best sailing i had last year, i can tell its going to be fun if all i can see are windsurfers out, it might have been a little ambitious for my first sail of the season though.. but i guess i'll never find out.
hopefully there will be a little wind towards the end of th week, and i'll finally hit the water, i managed to source the bits to get my van back on the road today and will hopefully be running again tomorow ,
roll on summer.. and free time... and pitchpoling.... and planing... and generally all the thing that come with sailing such extraorinaraly silly boats.

Can you bring the boat to the open at Hunts on the 9th? My magnum 6 will be out, and there should be a couple of axemen.
