G4 Thoughts
Re: G4 Thoughts
I think that would be OK.
I agree that G4 is best used as a primer or sealer directly onto wood and wouldn't use it by choice over anything else...
....but my experience is that you can use it to patch quite easily....which inevitably means that the G4 goes over the top of some varnish, around the edges and I havn't had any problem with it stripping, wrinkling or softening the varnish that it has covered.
So, my experience is that as long as what is underneath is relatively hardened, it will cover OK, without any problem.
But for normal use, I would certainly suggest you stick to using it as a primer.

Re: G4 Thoughts
Ok have asked the boss to order 10L of Bonda Marine wood sealer to do the gunwales and other bare wood bits, spars etc. Has anyone tried Bonda Marine 15 year white paint? have lots of white woodwork to do on the inside, aprox 21/2 foot high and 150 foot of it, there are other bits but this is the main section.

Re: G4 Thoughts
Had a great sail in the Jollyboat today but the decks look awful. The G4 is peeling in places and various patches of dark and light areas after a year. Not sure where I am going to find the time to re do them before the Nationals.

Re: G4 Thoughts
On wood, I cannot see any advantage in using G4.
Mixing chemistries is never a good idea, so my advice is use varnish over varnish. If you want a 'primer' use the one recomended by the varnish manufacturer; you can't go back to him and say 'it peeled off, guv' 'cause he will ask what you prepped it with.....answer; G4? game over.
Never had a problem with epifanes or international or blakes:-
1st coat 50% thinners, 2nd 25%, 3rd 15%, then the top (4) coats at 0-5%
sand in between down to 240/320 or finer
Some of the gloss finishes do not need sanding between coats but I wouldn't do more than 2-3 coats between sanding in any case.

Good for you. I have certainly not had any issues with it. And I will be looking for a can soon - when I get around to my Merlin.

"Product Description
G4 is a moisture cured polyurethane which forms a non-porous seal on wood, concrete, brick and porous stone. G4 uses the moisture in the air and substrate to cure and harden."
Anecdote suggests it sets rock hard. Some people on this site speak well of it.

Re: G4 Thoughts
One very good thing with G4 is that it remains very flexable when hard, ideal for a lot of older boats. I removed the excess from the pot I was using after 5 days and you could flex it like thin cellophane.
