Restoration of the Year

Post by roger » Thu Nov 15, 2012 2:11 pm

Please see message from Mervyn Allen below. He has put forward Merlin 16 Gently (Jack Holts own Merlin and the most successful Merlin ever in terms of Championship finishes. Chris Barlow did a huge amount of work on this boat and she was re launched at the Holt Centenary event at Wraysbury Lake and then raced on the Thames in the Holt Centenary Tideway. Please support this nomination

Roger

Hello Everybody

CLASSSIC BOAT AWARDS 2013

This magazine is running a competition for the best restoration of the year under various categories.

They want to hear about restorations completed during 2012 large or small.

I am sure that you have been following the restoration of GENTLY by Chris Barlow in the Merlin magazine over the last couple of years, and now it has been completed and Gently is back racing again.

I am hoping that you will support Gently in this competition, please go to the website

http://www.classicboat.co.uk/awards2013

The category that we are in is; Restoration of the year - Yacht under 40ft. Europe

I know that it all sounds a bit farfetched but they have asked for entries large and small, and from time to time they do write up about racing dinghies that have been restored.

If you can think of some more Merlin members that you can pass this information on to, then please do.

THE CLOSING DATE FOR THIS COMPETITION IS 20TH NOVEMBER

So we do not have much time

Best Regards

Mervyn Allen

There is some pretty stiff opposition out there so please vote. Gently is the only dinghy on the list.

I have also voted....I do hope gently wins, she was just remarkable when I saw her at the Jack Holt centenery regatta....

If it was hard for Gently before, it has just got an even tougher competition for Jack's favourite boat...look who they had sailing it for the pictures! (mind you, the alternative was being squeezed into a Mirror by Roger)

And for all those of you who know my reputation...I didn't break it, kick a hole in the bottom, hit anything in it...in fact, I was well behaved all day...............

Gently does have some things going for it.....word has it that Classic Boat will be featuring a major 'spread' on Gently and the work Chris did in restoring the boat in the next issue, due out anytime soon

I've wondered before if the clue to sailing her is in the name. By the way David I enjoyed your article in the merlin mag. Should I point out that the decks are 3/32 not 3/16" thick (that's 2.5mm) or would that have made sitting on them even more worrying? And the mast is now 2'6" taller than the one you used for the tideway!

Gently gets my vote. However she seems out of place amongst the other keel boats. Feel there should have been a Dinghy category.
