Hatch Size

Post by zaphod79 »

We have an odd shaped hatch that was attached to the Fireball, unfortunatally in removing it, it broke in two.

Went to buy a new one yesterday, and seems as it was made in BC they only do one a bit smaller and one a bit larger.

No room to cut out for larger one, so stuck with slightly smaller one!

My Plan

Epoxy on a piece of ply with correct size circle pre cut, then add on a small ring to top of that to even it out. Will exterior ply do this job? or does it have to be marine ply. In which case where can I buy a small amount of marine ply from?

Unless someone has a better way of doing this???

Thanks

You could post the size of the one that broke - a number of us are hoarders so you never know what we've got stashed away, just in case.

Indeed. I was looking for something today, which I didn't find, but came across several hatches, some of which even had the outer ring...

BC? British Columbia? Before Christ? Before Centimetres?

The magnum 5 has a similar hatch made in Spain which also broke. In the end I just made the opening a touch bigger to accommodate a newer one.

Been digging, and I'm afraid all mine are too small. Biggest is hole size 158mm.

Don't recognise that one at all...
Exterior ply will certainly do. What I think I'd do if I could manage would be to have the extra piece on the inside and paint it black so that from a distance it looks like part of the hatch cover. That might be easier said than done though if the decks are still on and you need to get your round patch through a round hole which is necessariily of smaller diameter.

Yes, I remember those.....

I remember buying a few when they were remaindered off at a couple of quid each.

Didn't seem to work very well for me.....had two positions:

slightly tight, which leaked but was removable.

and

tight, which only leaked a little, but was for all intensive purposes stuck in place for ever.

the plastic was very brittle and cracked as yours has done if you tried to do them up too tight, to stop the leaking - see above.

I don't think I have any left, but will look....

cheers

I was bidding on a couple of four inch hatches but they went too high. Clearly there are others out there with the same problem. We should create a hatch bank.

Nah, too pretentious, it'd be like calling a lean-to greenhouse on the back of your house an 'orangery' when clearly it is white!

I had that type on my Phantom when I bought it, and it's almost 40yrs old. All the outer rims had broken so it maybe a common problem. The cut outs on the Phantom were 172mm and so I managed to use these cheap replacements from ebay, but they are white.

The 6" ones have a 165mm cut out (check with the seller first) but still left me enough get a screw fixing though I made sure I used a good bead of silicone to get a decent seal. If your cutout is 175mm then things maybe a bit tight.
