Just been coating the inside of the Moth with Pond Sealer, as discussed along time ago on this forum. I've done a couple of other boats with it, too, and it appears to work, in V4 and G4 forms. The V4 is thinner than the G4 and more like coating with UCP.
But, earlier on today I was looking at a sanded and mended varnished Firefly rudder blade, and I was looking at a can of Holts clear plastic primer, and I thought, what the hell, and sprayed it...
Anyone know of any reason why it is all going to go horribly wrong?
It goes on shiny, and then as it dries goes matt, and as anyone who has seen my boats knows, I'm not a great fan of gloss anyway!

Wouldn't just be picking up moisture and matt = slightly cloudy?

I think it is matt because it is a primer. I often use the white spray primer touching in white foils (like Iso ones) as it comes out closest to the original finish. What I don't know is what the plastic primer is actually made from, and how it will stick to wood or old varnish!

Well like you, I have used the 'white' on plastic bits and found it to be pretty good.

But I have had some problems.....I do wonder how 'porous' it is? I have had times when foils painted or repaired with 'white' primer that have been left in the bottom of a boat for a while come out all 'bubbly' with lots of minute bubbles on the surface, so it just feels rough. REally close inspection shows that each bubble is full of water.

The other problem is that I have been tempted to just quickly repair a foil and paint the night before racing. This has been a disaster. The paint takes minutes to 'dry' but can take a couple of days to really harden.

never used the clear stuff......apart from anything else, its orribly expensive.

tell us what happens

cheers

I am pretty sure that Holt’s clear plastic primer is an acrylic paint. If you are spraying that over varnish the thinner in the acrylic may attack your varnish and cause your cloudiness, not a good situation.

I've not got cloudiness, just a non gloss finish! I've 1200 gritted it now, and it seems pretty good. I agree I did worry about the mix of Varnish and spray, especially as I've no idea what the varnish is, which is why I tried on a rudder, not a deck...The proof of the pudding will be in the drowning, I guess!

I dont know about sprays but the varnish on my old ent is really bad the last time I did some work but that was cos it was so cold and there was dampness in the air

Yep, the time to be working on boats is exactly when you want to sail them...

I have just put Blakes Dura Gloss on my decks and have been pretty pleased with the result. I put it on over the old Blake's single pack which they don't do now.
