Rope halyards.
Rope halyards.
what is a better way to attach rope halyards to sides and front of boat ?
at the moment they are just guessed and then tied, is their an adjustable method? perhaps similar to a rapelling system?

Re: Rope halyards.
Rob, Not sure what you mean. Do you mean Forestay and shrouds? or Halyards.
Re: Rope halyards.
Hi Kev, sorry for terminology, yes forestay and shrouds. at the moment you look at mast and tie off to loops, the mast needs to be 5 degrees forwards, if their was some way off adjusting it would be a lot easier than keep untying knots to adjust.
Re: Rope halyards.
Not entirely clear what you mean, but if you tie off to shackles, you can then simply undo the shackle? Often, though, you can do something like that with the shrouds, but if you want tension, put it on using the forestay.
What boat is this for?

Re: Rope halyards.
I am a bit embarresed to say, it is my Traveller, I thought about putting the question in Banter.
The forestay and shrouds both tie off to stainless steel hoops about 30mm diameter, their is nothing to adjust, if it is not right you have to untie the side that is wrong, I just wondered if their was something like a tent guy rope adjuster?

Re: Rope halyards.
The Laser EPS (and others) use a cleat on the forestay, but the shrouds are fixed. Other boats use all sorts of purchases on shrouds.
However, I assume you mean a Tinker Traveller, not a Morris one? I could see just cutting the shrouds to the right length and have a carbine hook on the end, so you just clip them on.

Re: Rope halyards.
Assume its a Cat rig?
Id have the shrouds spliced to the rings rather than knots. Then As Rupert says then use the forestay to tension it.
I think Keven Butler rigging do the Laser like cleat tensioner for not much money. this sorts thing

Re: Rope halyards.
Thanks for replies.
The rig I think is bermudan sloop.
I have seen these cleats used for kicker on Toppers, these should work really well.
Yes Rupert it is a Tinker Traveller, I hope to use it on the sea.

Re: Rope halyards.
Well if its a sloop then should you not use the jib halyard to tension the Rig, The forestay is only there in case you loose the wire (rope?) in the jib, not so vital. not sure mate dont really know the boat....trebor wrote:Thanks for replies.

Re: Rope halyards.
Hi Kev, Their are 2 tie off points on front of boat, the instruction book states to "adjust mast rake using forestay" then attach Jib ?
forgot to mention, the boat is a rib.

Re: Rope halyards.
It is indeed important to make sure the jib is a little tighter than the forestay, or it will sag, and the boat will have trouble going upwind. As I don't suppose this is a Tinker strongpoint, best to get it set up as well as you can. You could simply set the shroud and forestay length, clip them on, and make sure the shrouds are the right length that the mast is at the right angle when you put the jib tension on.

Re: Rope halyards.
The few tips on sailing in instruction book (2x A4 pages) state, be very gentle with rudder whilst tacking or boat will stall.
Their is no Kicker fitted (I intend to fit a simple one), no Downhaul or Outhaul either, just tie off points.
The boat is about 30 years old, their are Oars and the Transom can handle a 5hp Outboard.
