I've most recently had a off the boom aft main on the Skol. because I decided it helps keep the weight forward better when tacking.

My British Moth is 99.999% of the time far nicer to sail aft main, and the main always sets better close hauled (I think the mast and boom bend is then just better suited to the actual sail). But when its genuinely windy I do switch it to centre main as - like Rupert notes, a largish main on a small boat is not fun gybing in a blow with transom only sheeting. Its very quick to change with a pair of snap shackles on the relevant blocks.
