Roger be afraid be very afraid

Post by alan williams »

Now I have your attention, Roger knows why. I have just been given by Graham Brookes his Flying Fifteen, it needs a lot of cosmetic work on the wooden decks. The woods soaking but appears to be sound. I'm awaiting warmer weather to dry the boat out and will then consider varnish, Ronsons wood seal or G4. Don't expect to get the ply bone dry so it looks as if I'll be using gorilla glue and either the wood seal or the G4 with a UV screener. Any other thoughts on finishes would be help full. I don't want to paint as the decks are sapele and have white wood trim.. How does the wood seal compare with G4 as a finish? Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks Al

An ideal boat for you I would think Alan. Please keep clear of wooden Finns!

Good luck with the resto work! I've always thought F15s to be a lovely looking boat but never had a chance to have a play in one (hint!)....

Hi Keith
I'm still going to sail the Finn at away events but the FF could be a lot of fun when it's really howling and I don't want to capsize. You would be very welcome to have a go. However firstly I need to get it into a usable state and then learn how to reverse the trailer into tight spaces ( I'm really crap at reversing trailers).
All the best Al

Ease of reversing is directly proportional to size of trailer..... At least as far up the range as I've tried...

Used to reversing standard small things that you can see the end of. However the FF keel and it's overhang at the stern will I imagine make this a trifle more difficult. Plus the fact that the boat is higher than the rear window of my car. Plenty of practice is needed I think. Alan

I hope you're not depending on us Moth sailors to help you pull this one out of the water, the Finn is bad enough!

Should be good in a blow as long as the drinks cabinet is on gimbles

Happy new boat

It does require quite a specialised skill in order to do it though ;) I saw one at Draycote, on its side too once.

I have also seen one on its side, what I wanted was to see how they righted it, but I got distracted by capsizing myself.

Thanks Al, look forward to having a play one day... Glad to hear you'll still be finning too! I've got slightly less bad at reversing trailers over the last few years but am in no position to give advice... I work on the principle of give it a go but be prepared to get out and push it by hand if needed - probably not a good plan with a 15!

I once saw one upside down during partially windy round the lake race at BASS week  There's wasn't much rig left after gravity and physics kicked back in.
