A cocktail of solvents?

Post by Michael4 »

So it says on the side of the tube that Sikaflex 291 can behave badly if overpainted etc and not cure. It uses rather better language but you get the idea.

When overpainting Sikaflex (see above...) sometimes I have no problem and at other times it remains soft and the paint itself never hardens either. By 'never' I mean a year or more.

The result is sticky and a bit of a mess but it still keeps the water out.

I'd like to know what it is that it is reacting against. If it were doing it everywhere I'd understand but it isn't so I guess it must be reacting with a mixture of any of the following with which the boat at some point has been liberally anointed:

Woodworm killer
Clear Cuprinol
Deks D1
Undercoat ('oil based')
Gloss topcoat (silicon alkyd)

So can any of the chemists amongst you suggest the ingredients of the cocktail that is preventing the Sikaflex from curing?

Alternatively...you could simply say I am asking for it.
Tideway 206
11+
Sold the 'Something bigger and plastic', it never got used.

I have had antifoul soften polyurethane sealant into a sticky mess. It wasnt sikaflex but a commercial equivalent.
