Pegasus repair

Post by Chrisrjwood »

Hi All, I am in the process of replacing the mast step in peggie 187 (some of you may have noticed the bits of angle iron holding it together at Bowmoor!).

Does anyone know why the mast step/hog is offset to starboard as it runs forward from the centreboard case? I am assuming it is a design feature as my other peggie was the same.

I can't see why it needs to be offset, the new one I have made fits ok exactly fore and aft.

Any suggestions/advice?

Maybe you need a very bent boom like my one on Blue Peter to compensate!
Either that or the builder just had astigmatism.
Sorry Chris that’s no help at all but maybe there is a good reason.

So, I have replaced the mast step/hog in the Pegasus, lining it up absolutely centrally along the spine?

Next, having levelled the boat precisely side to side with a spirit level, I dropped a plum bob from the centre of the deck level mast partners only to find that the mast step is out by 1/2 an inch to port!

This leads me to believe that whoever laid up the hull, and/or fixed the deck on, was a half sighted incompetent moron! Forgive me if I am wrong....

Obviously that is why both my peggies had the mast step offset and a filler piece put in.

I think tha the most likely explanation is that the hull mould wasn't accurate?

I have rectified the issue by gluing an additional semi-cheek to the port side of the new hog and fixing the adjustable mast step to that.....

I've never come across a boat that was absolutely symmetrical. Add 40 years of use and abuse and half an inch isn't too bad!

I'm not at all sure how high a quality those GRP hulls were made too.. I do recall 194 had all sorts of different thicknesses of lay up in the floor when I had to repair a split in a particularly thin bit.
