There was a thread about making name transfers/decals on the old forum -but with little conclusion. I came across this for anyone interested and the prices did not seem ridiculous. They do the traditional gold with black outline or shadowing.

It appears that you don't have to varnish on top of this and it is tough - anyone know anything about it.

Another site (see below) sells inkjet transfer paper which you can print onto but you will need the right programme to give you the colours and shading you might want but you have to varnish over the top of the transfer once applied. Again - any info?

Hope this might be of help.

I have just had a go at making some name transfers - see the link

and they look pretty good although I have not actually stuck them onto the boat yet. I used Photoshop to make the lettering - you have various colours, fonts, sizes and shading/outline options and then you can print out the lettering. I used best quality print option which seems to give a good solid colour although exactly how well it shows up on my dark mahogany background I will have to wait and see on that one. On a pale background or a white painted plate it would look fine I am sure. They suggest an acrylic spray to seal the transfer before floating the transfer off in water as the inkjet ink is water soluble. It should then float off and you slide it into position and then after 24hours of drying a varnish coat completes the job. Will let you know how it goes. At 100 point font size you can get 4 transfers out of an A4 sheet with 13 letters printed landscape. This works out at about £2 per sheet ie 50p each name.
