Coast sailing clubs in the sarf west

Post by davidh »

Alan W,

I'll start by reminding you that it has been many a long year since the 505 and Hornet sailors were exiled en masse from Plymouth.... so are you still a member down at Mayflower and do you regularly frequent those waters?

Then, moving further afield, do we have any other contributors on the forum who are based at Coastal Clubs in what the London based BBC charmingly call the sarf west, ie, devon and cornwall (both north and South coasts)?

Worry not, this is not a claim for money for an affliation order but I'm seeking out some info!

Any help would be really great, I'll say all sort of nice things aabout the area too!!

Cheers to all

Dougal

nessa,

Good point and I've already highlighted Stacey (bray) as a contact at Pentewan. I need some more kindly souls in other locations who will not say '*** Off' when they get an email asking for some info!!!

Are you heading Cornwall wards this weekend?

Stacey is at Porthpean. No, I'm not going; I have courses to instruct and revision to do. :(

Not a great deal of dinghy sailing going on from Mayflower these days David but I am sure Big Alan can feed you the info you need when he comes along.

Check the club websites for contacts! There's always the opposition's (Y&Y) club finder too.
Am sending you pm too.

Pat,

Have got all the contact details but wanted that tad extra - someone I know (or who knows me) that I can talk to.

Ergo Big Al.... he's always good for a chat on sailing, even if that is at Mayflower!!!

Ben Lumby, who you met at the Hamble talk you did at the Firefly Nationals (Helming for Liz Evans) works for NMM Falmouth and sails at Restronguet. I can put you in touch, if you like?

Hi David
Left MSC about 7 years ago as the racing in Plymouth for dinghys collapsedand joined Roadford. The Hornet had fleet moved on to the RS800, which they broke at very regular intervals. They worked that the two years they had sailed them had cost them more than owning second hand IOR racers or Sadler's so have now moved on to Yacht Bashing. I moved on to multihulls and then the Finn as I lost my crew when my daughter went firstly to University and secondly when she married.
Let me know what info you need and I'll send a Pm to you.
All the best Al

there's only one place to sail, on the coast in the south west - Lyme Regis.

A few complain about the harbour entrance, listen to the locals, we know how to get in and out - it's easy.

Nice club, nice bar, nice members, nice pubs, nice restaurants.......
The only canoe sailor in MY village too !

Stu,

Love Lyme.....did the 505s there years ago and had one of the all time sailing experiences! A fair SW breez gave spinnaker reaches down some awesome ways, like going down in an express lift! How do you manage a Canoe there.

Only problem.... tis in Darkest Dorset, at this point in time (though this is liable to change) am only interested in Devon and Cornwall.

Cheers though for the thought.... really enjoyed the 5 mins sitting here thinking of Lyme. Word has it that the 505s may go back next year

I have a GPX file whch seems to have most/all of the sailing clubs in the UK as waypoints that I can mail to people. You can just download some freeware such as EasyGPS to use it (you do not even need a GPS as it allows you to view a waypoint vai Google Earth). Let me know if you want it & I can email.

A quick scan gives:
