Similar to Rogers suggestion, I have also used a wax based bike chain lubricant for a number of different applications. I think its called white lightning. The idea behing it is that it goes on as a liquid, dries like wax and wont attract grit or dirt. Seems to work ok most times, but does need to be topped up.
