First sail today in P48. Excellent. A bit of sorting needed for the stays and a small leak from somewhere but otherwise a very pleasant sail indeed.

Hi Trevor.

I've yet to find one that doesn't. Usually along the CB case hog joint. Sealastic seal perishes. Not easy to cure without removing CB case to reseal. Try marine sealant along joint both inside CB slot and inside boat. I tend to use the self bailers to drain the water out as I sail.

It has occurred to me, that when I removed the mast jack system I had the shrouds shortened - maybe by not enough- I had been using my other mast instead! Should be easy to get them shorten further if necessary.

Glad to hear all going well.

Dear Greg.

Have checked database for P166. Unfortunately No.166 is shown as unallocated in the 1971 records. The boat would date from around 1965-66 but there are no records of any original or subsequent owners I'm afraid. I will check the pile of docs I have to see if I can shed any light on this. There are 8 boat numbers unaccounted for in the records No. 250 being the last built in 1971.

It is probably an early Rebore MkI composite. Check to see if there is a plastic plaque set in the hog behind the CB case saying 'Rebore Specialists (Plastics Division) Markfield Leicester'

Cheers

You wrote a letter to the previous owner, Adam Rutter, in which you have suggested that he could use one of the following sail numbers; 166 180 181 184 185 186 188 or 189. I assume he then went ahead and used 166 as this is the current sail number. I don't know if he contacted you and told you which one he used. Is this any help to you?

Thanks Greg, you're quite right I had forgotten about that. I will update the database accordingly.

Andy,
Back in the 1960s Bell woodworking sold several kits to a dealer in the United States, The last known address was somewhere in Maryland I believe. I have tried to find those boats over here and have drawn a blank. Has anybody else from the USA contacted you regarding those boats? or did they just fall into a black hole?

Dear Brian,

My records indicate Mr. J. Wright imported P11, P29, P30 & P55 into the USA 1959-61. The address then was 328 West Queen Lane, Philadelphia, 44Pa.

Any Help?

When I lived in New Jersey I looked all over the north eastern united states ( That was in the 1970s) and could not find a trace of those boats then. I was hoping that an owner had contacted the class association.

Brian, I never had any contact from the original owner and the boats have not reappeared on the database. It is possible that the boats may have been repatriated to the UK. I don't know if J. Wright was an American or a Brit Abroad!.

Probably we will never know.

Hi Andy,

we took 178 for a sail as soon as we got it back to the lake - what a fun boat - Chris came down on Wednesday and sailed it for the first time, he was a little concerned at the amount of water she took on board after a capsize (he thought she was sinking) but all that is in the past, now he wants wind!!

Unfortunately the rudder and stock broke on her fourth trip out and I had to desperately seek 'new'/replacement parts. Managed to get something in time for the weekend but the 'new' stock is a little long and causes a few steering problems as it hangs about four inches into the water. The old stock is repairable and should be back on by Friday.

With all this taking place I looked at the mainsheet and tiller systems and was wondering if anyone has converted a Peggy to a centre mainsheet (thereby removing the traveller/horse arrangement) and raised the tiller arm over the transom? Would this cause the boat to be too 'modernised'? Having looked at pictures from the 'classes' section it looks as though a centre main is being used but can't see clearly enough.

Looking forward to getting the plans etc. I will digitise everything and then return the originals and digital copies so that you can send it all electronicly in the future. Thanks for all the help with the purchase of 178 and for all the info about the class. We look forward to seeing you at another CVRDA meet soon.

All the best,

Colin.

Yes several have been converted to centre main - but because of the high boom I feel you need to add in some form of adjustable bridle, which is pulled from side to side each time you tack - well thats how I do it on 194 anyway (all as suggested by Andy) and it seems to work - and you can then at least get boom in the centre.
Fireball rudder works well - the original Pegasus rudder is useless -
Fireball spinnaker is about right size too.
Where are you sailing the boat ? You are welcome to come & have a look at mine - at Bowmoor in Glos.
Can you make the cvrda event this w/e at Bowmoor ?

Forgot to say - ref capsizes - helps if you move the front tank as far back as it will go - i.e touching the mast - helps prevent the submarine effect - but you still need a good bucket and transom flaps will work if windy enough.
Job for the winter !

I bought a super pump from Jimmy Green's - stirrup pump style but pumps on both up and down strokes. Best of all it works with both air and water so will clear the boat as well as inflate the buoyancy bags!! It's plastic though - not very cvrda but effective.
