Not an Osprey?

Post by Nigel »

Hi all,

it says "Opsrey type" but the bow doesn't look right to me. Maybe a 17ft Dolphin? Thoughts?

If the picture is a true indication of it's condition, and it has any classic pedigree its alot of very nice looking boat and kit for £100 that it's on for.

Looks to be on sale from a very nice looking house too, so might be surplus to need and being let go of through lack of interest.

I haven't the space, but if I did, as a family cruiser, it looks very nice.

Can't really see the bow properly as it's partly obscured by the trailer but it certainly looks like a MKII Osprey to me (I raced them for 20 years).
Best wishes

Looking at the pics I'm with the Badger on this - I'd say Osprey all the way!

Apparently an 'out of class' Osprey.

Certainly looked like an Osprey to me.

Great CVRDA fodder this one I would of thought.

An inch or less too short? What tolerences are allowed generally with measuring boats? I could understand a problem with a boat too long.

It sounds that there may be a story behind it though Maybe a lot of hard work to make her followed by a Homer Simpson "D'oh" moment when the tape measure was applied.

I do like her though :)

Overall length 5335mm to 5385mm. Yes the person who built her must have been gutted when he discovered she didn't measure.
Best wishes

A similar thing happened with the first 3 post-war ICs built by Uffa Fox in 1947 (Rannoch, Storm Petrel and Merderka). All 3 ended up being on the narrow side so had rails underneath to get the chain measurement. These '9sq m' canoes carried on until the 1960's with the additional chine rails to make sure they measured, then they became uncompetitive and no-one cared.

I believe a certain well know CVRDA Finn also was slightly under sized when first built

My "Racing" Osprey was tweaked to the nearest millimeter when she was built by John Claridge. She has two large sections of her rocker built up with epoxy and microballoons to get her in class. Funnily enough her 20 year old hull shape is very similar to the latest mark 4 Ospreys.

Yes, Django (K197) is measured undersized. However she was given a certificate because being narrower puts her at a disadvantage.
I'm going to ask for a handicap adjustement!

And from what I've seen of the handicap figures and discussions so far the Phantoms and Merlins could be in for yet another -8 this year!
