I tend to sail my International 14 single handed which means I am over-canvassed in all but light winds.
I was thinking of buying a set of second hand Firefly sails to use in more windy conditions.
What do the experts think of this suggestion.

It sounds like a good idea to me, I used to use an OK sail for strong winds cruising in my Finn.

Would work perfectly in a vintage 14. It is almost the 'traditional' choice. I have certainly seen photos of vintage 14s under Firefly sails
I can't remember now.....but there was someone on the forum a few years ago with a vintage 14 rigged (mast and all) with N12 rig/sails. It was very interesting really because it didn't look under canvased at all (well a bit) but the owner reckoned it sailed very well like that and I am sure that was right.
Is it the 'Lido' or the 'Jet14' which is an Uffa Fox 14 hull rigged with smaller sail, which is common in the US?

Also worth considering that Int14 sails were much smaller at the time of K378 and they didn't always sail with the full allowed sail anyway, so Firefly sails were not such a big difference as they would be against a full size set of 1960s int14 sails.

I was thinking of doing this, as we already have a Firefly. The two boats already share the excellent Sovereign combi trailer...
IIRC, according to Uffa, Firefly is 90 sq ft and the 14s of his day were 125 sq ft (plus unmeasured jib overlap!). The booms are almost the same length, doe to the Forefly extra boom length to reach the transom; and the mast isn't that much taller, as the 14 has the original limbo dancing boom height and the Firefly has the modern "kinder to geriatrics" one, but it would be a real shame to break the original mast.
Fireflies once came with a "training mainsail" (we still have one) which is even smaller...

I have a complete Firefly rig on Maelstrom for windy conditions, although I use the big rig for light winds.
The firefly rig fits almost exactly, the mast partners are in the right place and the shrouds fit without any adjustment although the fittings in the boat are adjustable.
The major problem is that the Firefly boom is too short for transom main sheeting by about a foot so that would need consideration, I have centre main sheeting on Maelstrom so no big issue.
Jib and main set well but the jib fairleads may need adjusting on your boat?
I'll send some photos if I can, the sails are new, overall costs around £600 for a full set with numbers.
