Moth Tuning
Re: Moth Tuning
Pat will have a fair few in the system, and we can figure the others out from the old books.

Re: Moth Tuning
thanks Rupert. There will also be two 'classic' phantoms, planning to look them up in Blandford and Burrett etc.

Re: Moth Tuning
Nessa no panic - I've a set of figures ready. The handicap committee can have a final say anyway.
Phantom isn't in my Burrett but I'd guess we could rate it similar to an unmodernised Merlin of that era. Can't tell until we see it on the water.

Re: Moth Tuning
in one of mine - can't remember which - it gives 92. Both boats are old and patched, but they are very pleased to be able to take part.,

Re: Moth Tuning
That's about what I was thinking - Merlins go at 91 for classic.

Re: Moth Tuning
My 1974 Boat World gives 92. In theory it should be faster than a Finn (same sail area and length, more beam, half the weight) but on the water I'd expect to give them a close race.

Re: Moth Tuning
I've just become the new owner of Int Moth 3936, which started this forum thread- having seen the daggerboard, I'm not at all surprised Alex couldn't get the boat to point!

Re: Moth Tuning
Sadly this weekend I am mostly whoring myself out to the obscure branch of the Civil Service concerned with search and rescue co-ordination. I have to pay for all the toys somehow...
Seriously though, a lowrider Moth meet sounds like an excellent idea, I did see a forum post a little while ago talking about organising something, has one yet happened?

Re: Moth Tuning
On the original topic- why doesn't the boat go upwind?
1. The daggerboard is (or was before it became a two piece) a very roughly hand shaped piece of 1" plywood, not the same cross section both sides, and with a sort of undulating finish. It weighs about as much as the rest of the boat put together, yet is slightly shallower than the rudder when fully down!
2. By far the most significant issue is that the mainsheet bridle is too long, meaning that the system goes 'block to block' well before the sail is sheeted in as far as it needs to be.
3. Somebody said something about downhaul tension, correct! although this would be far less of an issue if it wasn't for the other two problems.
