PY starting point for 1971 Imperium scow international moth

Post by phil58490 »

I have just bought a 1971 Scow moth, thanks to Jools on here, I intend to sail it inland but I need some kind of PY rating for my club. In time I will end up with personal handicap for the boat but I need a starting point. Any suggestions before I have to start on a foiling moth's handicap.

We have a list of PYs from IMCA(UK) that are age related for various designs. The oldest being the magnum 3 from around 1980. That rating was the same as an Enterprise (now 1115).
I would suggest for a scow a fairer starting point would be the same as a British Moth at 1164 and see how it performs in various conditions.

I worked out 1135 as being about right for my Skol, which is an early 70s design... A Europe (which is broadly 60s Moth) is currently 1148, and I doubt a Scow would be much faster than these unless you are sailing on open water in breeze most of the time.

Thanks for your suggestions, I think 1148 looks like a reasonable starting figure as we have a Europe and Solos (both on that last time I looked) and I can gauge how I do against those and work from there.
