I have bought Wayfsrer 1828, grip I'm afraid, with the intention of doing some Day Sailing and Cruising. Any suggestions for kitting it out and modifications to make? It's a basic mk1.

Hi Nessa,

I would look at some additional straps for the big hatch at the back (and at the front?). They have been known to pop off in a capsize.

Secondary means of propulsion - so either a set of oars or an outboard.
Anchor - something like a smallish Danforth with a couple of metres of chain then at least 30 metres of either polyester or nylon.
Anchor/mooring fairleads up by the bow.
Jib furler if it hasn't already got one.
Slab reefing for mainsail.
Maybe a topping lift.

When I've cruised my mods have just been a set of reef points on the main (I've found you only really need the luff and leech crinkles, the flap doesn't really get in the way) or a smaller main (I've used an OK main on the Finn), an anchor and line in a bucket, paddles or oars and a mobile phone a dry bag. Then whatever food, clothes and sleeping arrangements you want. In the Finn I've slept in the boat under the cover and camped ashore, both work.
