Firefly ones were put on before the decks were put on, and screwed from underneath.

Wedge shaped blocks in front, with weights to stop them moving, then tape/weights on the splash boards to hold them down?

Some merlin ones were screwed from the top , through the deck and into the framework underneath.
The holes for the screws were drilled at a bit of an angle from the crew side and countersunk in. they do remain visible of course and you need to know where the deck beams are!

I strapped them down in position with a couple of ratchet straps right round the boat, with blocks to hold them in position then climbed in carefully and screwed up from the inside.

Paint or Varnish ?

Your wife must be a saint, I could get £250 off "you've been framed" if I filmed my wifes reaction when she walked in and found a part built boat.

I would put a link on Y&Y too, (if only to wind up Graeme), but no), people are interested.

Wife? Not had to put up with one of those for 15 years!!!

Paint, to hide all the filling... I'm thinking black over bright pink... I want it to be obvious when I need rescuing!

A while since the original post I know but I've just received some paperwork regarding National 12 N2302 which I will be working on - the original Chippendale invoice calls them Washboards, as of 17/05/1965 this particular optional extra (fitted) would have set you back £1 and 5 shillings...those were the days.

Mind you, I started work the next year at £8 a week - it is, as they say, all relative.
