Well we made the Head of Harbour race and it stayed dry and quite pleasant but very shifty for that, then got gusty and poured later. I'm glad we made the effort though and we didn't capsize

"increasingly gusty winds" = ease everything and hope to stay upright
"revived memories of the mast breaking" = Sandy was bricking it!
