Bristol Avon event

Post by Pat »

The cvrda Bristol Avon event is scheduled for Sunday 18th April though I fear we may lose some home boats and possibly some Shearwater boats too. There has been a long standing three way twinning between Bristol Avon, Shearwater and Alkmaar sailing club in Holland in recognition of the assistance given by the Bath area to the reidents of Alkmaar during and after the second world war. Many members of both clubs have exchanged visits and this year Alkmaar club celebrates its centenary and has invited its UK twins to the big reception on 17th April in Alkmaar. So don't be surprised if our event takes second place.

Shame it clashes, but I'm glad to hear the event is happening - I'd heard it had faded a little in recent years.

The three way event had faded and died (after all who really wants to sail on a puddle and a ditch when they have that lovely open water at Alkmaar)but Colin Singer (comodore at Shearwater) tried to get it going again and Bristol Avon and Shearwater still compete for the Gilmer Trophy on a bi-annual basis. Currently held by Bristol Avon I beleive.
Of course its still open to Alkmaar if they chose to send a team.

oops Sorry way off topic .....but no poetry

Sorry I am working that weekend so wont be there.

Shame you won't be there - I can remember the green godess GP doing a great job as a river barrier in the name of team racing for the Gilmer Cup, much to Angie's embarassment!

More information below about the event from Mike Brock, who is organizing it all

BASC is delighted to be holding a joint racing day at Saltford on April 18th 2010.
This will be a normal club Sunday timetable with races at 11.00, 13.30 and 15.00.
There will be separate flights for CVRDA entrants.
Charges for CVRDA entrants are £3.00 single handed or £5.00 for crewed boats.
Lunch will be available in the clubhouse for a nominal charge.
We are situated on a delightful stretch of the Bristol Avon with challenging winds
and variable currents. There are plenty of photo opportunities as spectators can get
up close on the riverbank on either side of the course.
BASC is at Mead Lane Saltford Bristol BS31 3ER. See You Soon !

gosh, I remember Saltford from my days as a west country girl....I used to sit in the pub garden wondering what those idiots were doing in little boats with bits of cloth flapping about!

It truly is a beautiful site. I now begin the month from hell when every weekend and many weekdays will be spent at the club hoping my DI trainees pass and generally getting fed up of watching other people sail.

I have been pondering how one can have a three way twinning?

Just a week to go! Will be odd to be there without Bob, though. Maybe the cvrda could twin with Bob's new club in Australia?

AG, would Tripleting be better?
Or do 3 separate twinnings come together for the event in Holland?
