Interesting that the top boats are all wood. Are they lighter/quicker than the grp or is it just the way it turned out.

Its much more to do with build and rig. First was a wooden Taylor, probably the fastest wooden boat ever made and Mark's is pretty much as new. Second was a glass Vanguard which superseded Taylors as the fastest Finn until Devotis came out in the mid 90s. Third was awooden Fairey, never considered a fast boat but probably not suffering from weight gain or softness like an old grp boat. But it should also be .oted that the last 2 boats were an old Pearson and Elvstrom, bought very cheaply. Neither were uncompetitive and were right up in among or with the fleet.

As the owner of the old Pearson, I can confirm that the boat was quick enough, but the nut holding the rudder was defective! The best sailors were at the top of the leader board!
