Quick flashback of the weekend, Pat will be doing full report and some great pics are being beamed across as well. Absolutely fantastic weekend, great to see families sailing especially Jeremy taking Finlay and Zac out in the Albacore and despite not sailing for a number of years being well on the pace and mixing it with the fleet. Also Don and Coral in their hastily repaired Fifteen who had to sit out Sat while the epoxy set who completed all three races on Sunday their first full day of racing ever. A Classic Weekend with great fellowship, catering as usual superb, complete with tall bar tales on the weekends events.

Clywedog Sailing Club held its annual Classic and Vintage Open meeting on Aug 6th & 7th. Clywedog’s fleet of six dinghies were joined by four visiting boats two of which were over 50yrs old. The CVRDA races under 1965 handicap ratings and modified boats are further handicapped according to their state of tune. Two races were held on Sat afternoon in ideal conditions and racing was very close. The flying fifteens took line honours but Rupert Whelan in his immaculate minisail won both on handicap with the Enterprise of Peter Vinton in 2nd.

A great social and evening meal was enjoyed by all on the Sat night, Sunday dawned overcast and gusty winds but perfect for these older dinghies.

Two races were held back to back in the morning with extremely close racing throughout with Whelan in the Minisail and Rollinson/Townsend in the fifteen sharing the honours.

The final race saw Rollinson/Rowley in the fifteens neck and neck the whole race with Rollinson just edging it on the line. The competition was just as intense further back with the Albacores and Wayfarers enjoying a great duel.

On the final countback despite four line honours Rollinson/Townsend were edged into second place by Whelan on handicap and in third overall were Pat/Sandy in the Albacore.

Despite the low numbers this was rated as one of the best meetings at Clywedog for some years with great sailing wind all weekend and classic dinghies doing what they were designed for, racing with enthusiasm and enjoyment.

Results.

In many ways, it was one of the best cvrda meetings from over the last 12 years. Numbers were lowish (4 Flying 15's make any startline seem crowded!) but there were enough boats around to always have a race on the water. There was a good variety of boats, from the little Wagtail that came out but didn't race, the Vinton Ent, with wooden spars and 1965 sails (the kind of combo we need to deal with more generously on handicapping, & will be at Whitefriars), a couple of GRP Applecores having tight racing, and 2 very different examples of Wayfarers, one very old wooden and a not quite so old GRP one, both very much in the spirit of the cvrda. I was surprised to be the only singlehander racing, mind - it was ideal Finn weather!

The weather, while being typically shifty, was windy enough for good fun, whilst not putting people off, causing capsizes, or breaking things. Just right, infact. Most of the rain was over night, and the heavy showers on Sunday brought wind along, so mainly went un-noticed, bar the bailing.

And the course for the last race was a stonker! Long, long beat, followed by a short run, then a tight planing reach, gybe, a broader reach where spinnakers could be set by the ff's, gybe, another tight reach, gybe, and then a run down to the leeward mark. Excitement all the way, especially in a little flat bottomed box!

As usual, the company was excellent, too.

All in all, well worth a 24 hour journey to get there. Mind, the 3 hour trip home with aching arms, legs and back seemed longer!

Report (taken from above) and full results are now on the main front page.

We had some stonking sailing, trying to catch those fifteens. It was good to spend so much time hiked rather than hunched in the boat! Roll on next time!

Thank you Keith and your team for a wonderful extended weekend. Kate, Cassie and I had another lovely trip to our favourite Welsh water.
Rupert, our pleasure for the chocolate and marmite, perhaps we ought to try something heavier to get that handicap down!!
