Holt event at Wraysbury, July

Post by chris »

Wraysbury Sailing Club will host a special event to celebrate Jack Holt’s centenary on the weekend of 7th, 8th July 2012.
Wraysbury was founded by Jack Holt and he sailed there with his wife. The story goes that she was not keen to crew the Merlin with him at Ranalagh and Wraysbury offered quieter sailing. He designed the Enterprise specifically for him and his wife to enjoy sailing there.

Please use this thread to express your interest in coming to this event with your Holt boat.
Use the other thread to offer your help in organising this event. Please keep the thread on topic. We’ll start a third thread to gather your stories about your Holt boats and general Holt stuff. (see the Chat thread)

We will require pre-registration and if we become oversubscribed a reserve list may be required. Boats that have not registered will not be able to attend. There will be a first come first served system for classes that become over subscribed. Roger is going to be in charge of boat registration. Boats selected will be asked for an entry fee of £15 for a single hander or £25 for a double hander to confirm their entry into this event. So start your entry now!

We will need to limit the number of boats to under fifty and it is hoped to represent all of the dinghies that Holt designed or built. (see below for list). Some examples may be difficult or impossible to locate but we want to try. We would like to have a spread from the earliest examples from a class to a modern version to show the development of his work. For instance Enterprises no 1 and 2 exist and the owners have expressed interest in this event. An up to date version would make an interesting contrast. With development classes like the National 12s his involvement was a little more limited and only a few Holt 12s exist still (possibly as few as one or two). He was the original designer for the Merlins and dominated the fleet till Proctor became the leading name. So do we include an up to date one or keep to the many Holt designs?

The two day event will include points races, maybe a pursuit, concours and display of boats and hopefully photo/information display etc. There is a nice camping area on site etc. Please help to make this a special event to celebrate someone who made such a contribution to the dinghy sailing world.

Holt Boats:
Cadet, diamond keelboat, enterprise, GP14, Heron, Hornet, Int canoe, Int 14, Jacksnipe, lazy E, Merlin, Miracle, Mirror, Mirror 16, National 12, North Norfolk16, Pacer (formally Puffin), Rambler, Solo Streaker, Vagabond.

Roger asked for a registration form on the website which we can do as the software has it built in. I just need the fine detail now.

Gareth has the honour to be the first to use the online registration form. Gp7 has a very interesting history which i hope Gareth will write up for us for our exhibition.

Please spread the word and lets make this a great success.

Hope I get a place!

There is a very short (& highly edited) piece about this in the news section of Classic Boat mag, complete with a picture of our Junior National Champions!
