looks like an early planked and ribbed MR to my untrained eye.. If not what is it?

I don't think it is a merlin or even a Rocket.
How about a YW Dayboat? There's a block for a heavy metal plate and about 12 planks, all the merlins I've ever seen have 8 or 10. The sails might give a clue.

Agree with Chris. The stem is not vertical so in my mind rules out a Merlin or Rocket. No side thwarts either. There is a bollard for tying up. I can't see the centreboard - is it a metal plate - that would rule out a Merlin.

Redwing?

But I think they are Keel stepped masts, and this one is deck stepped, which again makes me think Merlin.

But are the decks original or a later addition? The thwarts and quarter knees also look newer than the hull, even though the decks seem now to be delaminating. (A cheap Re-decking/modernisation of a merlin or Redwing?)

Yeah, but one bad winter damp and uncovered outside will do that, so it doesn't really prove that much.

I agree that its a metal centreboard.

Surely not a Merlin.

Either a YW Dayboat or a Redwing.

I often get the two mixed up....till I have a really good look

But I think YW Dayboat.....it looks heavy enough.....floorboards look right....it has a rear thwart.

there was a fleet of them at Thornbury....so could be local.

I recognise where it is.....the marina carpark at Bristol Harbour.

cheers

Hi Ed.... It's an Swordfish masquerading as an Albacore.....sorry...wrong boat!

Okay - my money is on a very early YW Dayboat
(but hey..what do I know - I still think the other boat is a swordfish!)

Only a tape-measure would of ever told the difference with the Albacore/Swordfish question.

I don't reckon its a Merlin/Rocket but could it be a Kingfisher?

An addendum to the advert now states that it is a Y W Datboat built by Walkers 1963.

Oh I dunno, there's someone at my club who can tell the difference between old and modern shape albacores by eye at a distance. The Swordfish ought to be easy by comparison. Of course you do need reasonable photo angles.

Oh, yes....that Kingfisher!

I was thinking about this today and thought that the only Kingfisher I could think of was the Selway Fisher design....which of course wouldn't be in any of the old 'books' as it wasn't designed till quite recently. Not sure of date exactly...but certainly not CVRDA fodder.

The YW dayboat was much older than any Kingfisher I think.

I thought the Kingfisher was a rip off of the Norflolk one design. Built down near Ipswich?
