Merlin on ebay

Post by Ed »

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... SS:GB:1123

Item No: 140606850004

Lying Southampton.

Looks like Sail no: 1598, which would make it: Tinkette a Proctor Mk XII by R.E.Hoare

Can't say there is anything about this one that says 'buy me'

Typical. I'm from Southampton and am going to Kent later today with a view to buying Proctor MkXVI MR1711.

Mind you, this was another one of those where the owner said he was going to scrap it if it didn't sell, so at least I can get a warm glow about 'saving' a nice but not especially historic craft.

Do people really burn boats they can't get rid of or is it a sales tactic?

They do!

Neil got there a day late once (trying to rescue a Flying 20 or 25) to find it all chopped up ready for the fire.

I am putting a Jollyboat on the fire this November...

Natural attrition :-)

Yep, missed a Flying 20 and then a lovely Folkboat by a few days. The Folkboat had a chainsaw taken to it.

I once got a Flying15 rudder via a source who had spent weeks breaking the (wooden boat). He put it in bin bags over a couple of months for the bin men to take away. I think the keel is still in his cellar.

Sacrilege!

Anyway, I am now the proud owner of MR1711, so this craft here will have to be enjoyed by someone else. The (previous) owner ensured me if I hadn't bought it last night he would have stripped it this morning and burnt it in the afternoon. It already has a spare rudder and centreboard from a similar boat that was broken up a few years ago.

I hope my old N12 hasn't suffered that fate.

Ed. Just out of interest mailed seller to ask if boat actually 1598 - he confirmed sail # but "no number on thwart" - could possibly be on hog? Anyway not of interest to me, although some Mk. XII's are going well on the river!

1711's number is on the centreboard case, and is pretty prominent. If anyone wants me to have a look at the eBay boat FWIW I can try to get over there.
