very cheap classic moth

Post by michaeljdixon »

I was told this boat was an International moth when I bought it, about ten years ago. My son sailed it a few times, and swam round it rather more, but it's not been used for a few years. Fibreglass, complete but scruffy and no trailer (but it doesn't weigh very much) and you can have it for £100 (which is what I paid...). Sail number K3113
Near Cambridge

Its certainly an Int Moth, but old enough to be sporting a low aspect rig. 3113 would be late 60's so just before the taller fully battened rig was allowed. Being fiberglass its likely to be a Duflos or Skol design?
Got to be worth a look Nessa

My resistance lasted about two seconds. I have Michael's phone number and postcode. It is literally just up the road.

Take it in hand Nessa, you know it's the right thing to do

Besides, with the reinvigoration of the 'classic' moff fleet, you're best placed to pass this on to someone who will join in.

She asked me what it is for. What kind of question is that?

I was tempted at 0630 this morning when it first appeared but knew my wife would have asked the same question.

Glad it is going to a good, kind and caring home.

See the photos in the Boat Id section. I'm pretty sure it's a Skol, but I'm no expert.

I see myself as curating these boats so they don't disappear into nothingness, and if someone wanted one and was going to put it to good use I would happily let it go. Hotspur, if you are keen let me know and we can sort something out. I will warn you though, you said you wanted somehting that wasn't a handful....in which case this might not be what you're looking for. The absence of wings etc does not mean it's stable. I thought my Skol felt as tippy as the magnum 5. I do have an unidentified winged low rider which is more stable, but none of them are easy.

Thanks Nessa, that's very kind. When I said not a handful I was primarily thinking of very physical boats that would #+%{^ my knees and back, but I take your point - I used to sail a N12 and spent as much time upside down as upright. I have sailed a Skol, once, but many years ago and that was in light airs so no doubt not the best impression and any boat with me in it now will have a higher centre of gravity than was the case in my youth. I recall it may have had a fairly shallow cockpit as well. That said, I think it was Dougal who suggested an old Moth as a possibility and they are attractive boats.

The Skol was fun, but the cockpit floor was very high, and did my knees no good at all. Matt, the youngster who had it after me, had much more fun. I hope his sister, who now has control, I think, has fun too.

Might be one to leave for the youthful and fleet of foot then!
