Interesting...

Post by Max McCarthy »

I wonder how valid a claim like this can be thought of:

Either way, looks a nice boat.....

Cheers,

On another note (having done a very small amount of research), it seems there is certainly some indication in showing it can quite probably be true:

Interesting, to say the least....

Doesn't surprise me that Nick Mason sailed a Fireball, given his love of speed on the roads...

I have trouble imagining Syd Barrett on the wire tho'....

Raced against Simon La Bon of Duran Duran in a Fireball. It was he and not the drummer who owned Drum. Really nice guy at least he was then and I would imagine still is.

Nick Mason certainly sailed a Fireball.

He was a member of Dell Quay SC where his father, Bill, also sailed a Fireball (FB189) and was Commodore for a period in the late 1970s. Perhaps mistakenly, I had always thought Nick's last Fireball was FB9117 'Honourback' which he bought from Ian Gray and that Nick stopped sailing her around 1976-7 after which, following a period in store, he sold her to a fellow club member with whom I occasionally sailed. I don't recall Nick sailing at the club anytime after that period although occasionally he would bowl up to his parents house adjacent to the club driving very impressive cars!

The Fireball on e-bay is (I understand) FB13315 which is a very late 1983 hull and was sailed in the 1984 Nationals by O Benn & D Broadly of Sussex Motor YC. I've no idea how Nick Mason fits into the picture though!
