Lymington Pram

Post by chris »

Subject:
Lymington Pram

I have received this message:

Message:
We have recently been given an old sailing dinghy to restore as we
live near Kielder Water. However, it has a plate on showing: George
Courtney Lymington. And on doing a little bit of research it would
seem that it is likely to be more than 100 years old and is likely to
be a Lymington Pram/Scow. So before we start work on it in an
amateurish way we thought we would make sure that it would not be of
interest to someone to restore properly. It is 11ft and Gunter rigged.
It would seem to be pretty much in original condition, except for the
sail, although there is some warping to the bottom of the boat. We are
happy to donate it but of course as we are in Northumberland transport
may be a problem. Anyway, just don’t want to start work on it until
we are sure that it is not of historical interest to someone. Could
send photos to anyone who may be interested if that would be helpful.
Kind regards. Barbara Reynolds

I am not sure this is a Lymington pram as they are longer than this and not gunter rigged. My guess is its one of the Scows from around the Solent, Gunter rigged and 11ft long.

Claridge of Lymington still makes them both in plastic.

I did a bit of web reading. There were 11ft Lymington prams around the turn of the century before the 14ft ones, and the builder is right. It seems at that time Pram meant a boat designed as a yacht tender moere than a specific bow type.

Mt late Father was a member of the RLYC before I was born and is registered as owning an 11' Lymington Pram.

His embroidered RLYC burgee has pride of place above my head in the workshop and I have always wanted to re-unite it with a Lymington Pram.

I've built one dinghy and restored three, and am probably overly obsessed with originality, so despite trying to kick the habit like many CVRDA members, I am sorely tempted if available....!

Would love to see a picture.

If you want a serious project and I mean very serious I know of a Lymington pram (14ft) that the owner would dearly love to see in good hands. Alas I think she is beyond repair but if you want to look I can put you in touch.
