International Canoe

Post by infidel »

I have an old wooden, sapele decked International Canoe for sale. I can't find the number on the hull, but I think it might be 241. It's in very good condition for its age, with a crisp, and underused main (number K1, which I know is NOT official!), matching jib with small but repairable hole, and a spare jib. It comes with a trolley, good cover, and a mast which has the forestay, shrouds and spreaders, but no running rigging. The sliding seat is in good condition, likewise rudder and tiller. I'm open to offers, and based in Market Drayton in North Shropshire. If you want to see pictures mail me at stewartperkins@phonecoop.coop

Hi Stewart,

241 is unlikely.....that is only one boat before my nethercot made in 1992. Was it that new (newish!)

I spose it might be.....that number is marked as lost in the records, but this could mean all sorts of things, like it is sitting in your collection. Does it have a fore-aft sliding carriage? mid or aft sheeted? dagger or centre-board. Cold-moulded?

Some photos would be really good to see. I might be able to get you a bit closer in age at least.

I was in the market for a classic IC, but as I have just bought a 1971 Swedish built Slurp, that better do me for now. But some photos would be very interesting to see. Identification would be very useful as with such a small fleet, every boat has a story.

Hope you got to sail it a little at least.

Do you still have Jollyboat J161?

Good to hear from you

Hello Stewart ,Ed.
A member at my club near Narbonne has owned Rainbow sail number 2?? for a few years and now has it at the club. I understand this was the Uk national champ in 83 and 84. It's in lovely condition and he certainly can sail it. Very impressive.

I have Rainbow as 164 and Rainbow 2 as 232. Possibly ex Colin Brown boats. Rainbow with Colin Brown won some significant trophies in 1983 and 1984. According to Mr Eastwood's history 'twas the first Canoe - or at least modern Canoe - with a daggerboard, and held a record time for the Lord Birkett trophy race at Ullswater.

My mistake. This boat is 164. It has the name and a rainbow hand painted on the rear deck. I will not be down to the club now until late July but I will get a pic or two as soon as I can. The owner is French and the boat has been in this country for some years now. He rather likes my woody OK and has suggested we meet up one day and sail each other's boats. Um, well at least the water will be a very pleasant temperature by July or August but there are usually lots of jelly fish.

fwiw, (not much) we have K229, wood Nethercot, "Ogaf the Unbearable", also dated 1992. So either the date is wrong or 1992 was a good year for Nethercots.
CVRDA eligible:
1962(?) Firefly F3163 "Aquarius"
1946 International Fourteen K478 "Galatea"
Not CVRDA eligible:
1991(?) Nethercot IC K229, "Ogaf the Unbearable"
Squib. possibly number 251, "Squirt"

232 Rainbow 2 was 1992, 164 Rainbow must have been about 1981.

The original boat mentioned in this thread is K61 Confusion from 1963, which is the Canoe I mentioned recently in another thread as still needing a good home.

There was a link to some images on that thread.

Best wishes
