Coming in from the last race at Roadford I must have caught my rudder on MR 507 and I wrenched out the pintle from the transom. It's probably in a couple of feet of water now and dispite my eforts I couldn't find it. i thought I had another here but I thinks it's on MR36 now.
Does anyone have a bronze pintle (lower transome one , trefoil plate and I quess a 3/8th pin)
surplus to requirements?
To bolt or screw? that is the question. I had just used screws which have pulled cleanly out. Bolts may have held secure or the may have damaged the transom badly. Any opinions?

BUT they are about £25 new!!!!
I can't reallyanswer the screw/bolt question as my pintle locates into the keel. I used long stainless screws to fix it on Gannet. I had to replace the last foot or so of the keel as it was totally shot so I know the screws have gone into solid wood. I have to say that given the forces at the bottom of the rudder when you do ground I would be worried about ripping out a piece of the transom if it was bolted through. Bear in mind that this is the very area which will be the softest as it is always the first area to rot. Sorry I can't help with a spare one though. (You weren't using the pintle as a waterski line attachment point were you?!!!)

Re: bronze rudder pintle
Chris, Since you use a lifting rudder I would have thought the answer is definately bolt. I have bolted fittings on my Finn but a fixed rudder, I'm very careful about taking the rudder off early as I've seen too many Finns with split transoms.

Re: bronze rudder pintle
I think what happened was that I raised the rudder well in time but should have then removed the whole rudder as soon as we could . I'm quessing that when I was getting the boat onto the trolley in the shallow water I lifted the bow which, with the rudder straight out of the stern, would give a great deal of leverage at the pintle. So far I have always left the rudder in place but the solution is obviously remove straight away.
Roger, i'll give you a ring tonight.
