Something More Sedate

Post by jpa_wfsc »

After a couple of seasons trying, we are considering changing the Pegasus for something more sedate. Jane (wife and crew) is finding it too lively to learn to sail in.

So perhaps a change is called for. We need something a bit less lively than a Pegasus, CVRDA compatible, quick enough to be fun, three sails. The boom MUST be high as Jane has limited mobility in her back.

And ideally swappable for 'Blast from the Past'.

Any ideas or offers anyone?

GP14 would do most of what you want. You can even chose to sail with a smaler jib if it gets a bit blowy.
I would happily swap my jeep for blast from the past but the kids wont let me.

Merlins have quite a high boom and varoius rigs. plenty available to suit a choice or weights and water. Prices really do vary from zero to a few hundred for something (nearly) ready to sail. see the merlin forum and for sale section.

But are rarely described as more sedate than a Pegasus...

Jim you've seen us Merlins at Frensham. What could be more elegant and stately (and comfortable given the nice wide thwart of a Proctor design)?

In fact before the Peggie we had a Mk IX and enjoyed that a lot!

Lets see:
Thames Rater, Dragon, any other vintage wooden keelboat with fine long ends, I think there's quite a list.

My point was that whilst Merlins, young or old, have many virtues, they were designed to be race winning competition boats, and sedateness (isn't that a horrible looking word, even if it is correct: lets say sedacity?) was not one of the virtues intended by the designer. Elegance, yes possibly, even if mainly accrued by time.

just depends doesn't it....

nothing could be more elegant or sedate than a Jollyboat in Force 1-2.

But more obstreperous in a Force 5.

YW Daybarge PY=1200 (at Shearwater) hence handicap bandit on smaller inland waters.

Both are quite heavy to manoeuvre on launching.

Its funny , there are hundreds of classes, yet its still easy enough to find what feels like a gap in the market... An elegant, light yet moderate boat for the more mature dinghy sailors would be a nice thing perhaps, something like a 17foot FD with a non overlapping (maybe 29er size or a tad smaller) rig and weight a it lighter than an Enterprise so its reasonable to handle on shore feels like a nice boat to me.

Thanks for all the answers folk!

M16 might be just about right - the one on eBay needs a new floor but thats not ridiculous to fit. Will see what it sells at - cant go shopping till Pegasus is sold and not in any huge rush - 2010 season needs a solution by then.
