Wooden battens

Post by roger »

Have any of you cat sailors or ex Hornet sailors, or any sailors come to that got any long wooden battens stashed away in a shed? I have a fully battened main for Shoestring and would like to try it out and call me a purist but I would like to try the wood ones not plastic.

Try David Oddie he had the last of the hickory which he imported for loom shuttles sawn into battens and then along came plastic so he WAS quite well stocked!

I have an unused set of wooden solo battens taped to a length of 2''x1'' tucked away in my garage if you are coming to Roadford you can have a look, or we can use the delivery system to get them to you.

Graham any will help. The longest one is just over 8` but Any will be a start(I am guessing that solo ones will be shorter). Unfortunately I wont be able to come to Roadford but Chris Barlow will be there so may be he can bring them back.

How many beer tokens do you need?

Jools I have sent you a pm with dimensions if you have some.

8' isn't a batten - it's a thin boom!!! I have to confess that on my cotton mainsail for Secret Water in the absence of hickory I used pine strip from Homebase cut to length and width and the edges corners smoothed off and rounded and the sail set quite nicely with these. But of course these aren't 8' long. Oh yes I gave them a couple of coats of - guess what -- G4 to seal them and likely stiffened them slightly too!!!!

I will measure them up tonight but they are long as the eary solo's as you know were also fully battened.
As for cost, glad to see them going to a good home, perhaps a pint when we next meet.

I thought I had but somehow Microsoft has deleted him!
He lives in Warsash so 192 will find him. David Oddie, initial J. D. Oddie, one time Graduate Champion, Merlin Rocket Sailor now sails an X-Class "Magic Dragon". Alleround good guy.
