Old rope style

Post by Garry R »

Thanks to some theiving toe rag I have had my mainsheet and blocks pinched off the boat during the last week. The rope was probably 12mm and the old fashioned style which was soft to the touch rather than the slippery stuff prevalent nowadays. It has a cottony feel to it but have no idea of its official name nor where to get it. Can anyone help? I have no problems with the blocks as Classic Marine have them.

Garry,

What is it with these people

Some time ago i bought some rope from chap selling tradition ropes. I will see if I can find hos web site. I bought some cotton type rope for Shoestring for the centre board control. It reminds me of the ropes that used to come with the Mirror dnghy kits. They were really horrible and I wouldnt use this for a sheet now but he is a helpful chap and may be able to source some for you. He even sent me several samples so I could chose which one I needed.

I chose it for authenticity because Shoestring had been untouched for forty years and wanted to keep her the same.

found it

What kind of rope do you want?

a plaid or twisted.

I normally use 8 or 16 matt plaid. It isn't really original, but looks much better than shinny modern stuff and is kind on the hands. Not sure where to get it.....I normally have a few lengths hanging around that I bought from a boat jumble.

cheers

The only thing is how does it feel and reeve round small blocks under light load (Does it run?) and lets face it no matter what it feels like in a dinghy mainsheet it is well below its SWL!

AG has reminded me that the correct term for rope that is 'twisted' is 'laid'.

a term that always bring other things to mind, or as Dorothy Parker said:

If all the girls who attended the Yale prom were laid end to end......... I wouldn't be a bit surprised.

Love D.P. quotes
"When at last you say you're his
All shivering and sighing
And he says his love is infinite undieing
Lady just remember this
One of you is lying".
She and Oscar are the source of most good quips, as she - D. P was the first to point out!

ah well, just show the limit of my education as that's gone right over my head. The only D.P. I know about is not suitable for a family forum.

Keep on topic please (and that includes you Ed) or the thread gets binned
