Wanted Old Finn for Restoration

Post by wilfbishop1 »

Hi All,

I previously completely restored a wooden Fairey Marine Finn (K197 "DJANGO") that I sold to Ed some years ago when I had no winter storage for dinghies since I then lived in central Cambridge & had no garage. I now live up in the Yorkshire Dales and have a large workshop. So inspired by visiting the CVRDA website I have a totally irrational desire in my dotage (active late 60's) to find another elderly Finn for restoration - ideally wood but will consider GRP. I currently sail a Freedom 21 at the Ullswater Yacht Club but would love to also have a Finn available to sail in appropriate wind conditions.

I understand that PeterV is now the owner of K197 "DJANGO" and If he is interested I can send my photo file of DJANGO's restoration plus shots of her sailing in Suffolk, North Norfolk and Scotland.

So if any of the CVRDA Finn enthusiasts know of a suitable candidate for restoration I would love to hear from them.

Cheers,

I am sure Graham will be in touch.....

Classic Finns have been selling well recently, so there might not be so many real bargains out there.....but seek and you will find.

cheers

After seeing those very nice Finns at Clywedog and seen as I'm hankering after a s/hander that will take my bulk I might be in the markert for a 'project' Finn either wood or glass. I have looked at a couple of Phantoms from afar but they are somewhat rare and like I said a long way off.

The only proviso is that it has a useable rig and sail -I'm not so interested in going fast at this stage. Neither am I in any rush since I already have a project to be completed this winter and into next year

I once thought of my Finn as a GRP boat to keep me sailing while restoring my IC.... since when I have sold the IC.

The Finn is totally wonderful in the way it responds to what you do with no nasty surprises, yet still a lot of performance. You are not making the wrong choice! Good luck in your hunt.

I used to sail Phantom 14 - they are also a very good boat for us larger types, being much more dynamic than the Finn, but also often rather tricky. But classic ones will be rare as they had a very large and weak floor area. Mine was re-floored twice before it was 20 years old. Is K14 still sailing anywhere, anyone know?

Thanks Ed. I'm sure the administrators will not object to turning this into a Django appreciation thread! And since it's been shown that a Fairey Finn is the fastest, we need someone to restore the other one Graham's found!

I fear you are far too modest Peter!

I rather suspect any Finn would be pretty fast with you at the helm.

Or to put it another way, I never felt that Django was that fast and was (and still am) amazed by how fast she is in your hands.

Order ! Order!

Mr Moderator, this I believe is a Finn appreciation thread. It seems that all this mutual admiration is making all those Finn sailors go pink and fluffy on us!!!

Finns are addictive and sailing Django certainly converted me to the class.

I'll try and get some pics sorted of the Elvstrom rebuild that's progressing slowly.

I'm currently making the tooling for the deck plate that will take a modern Deck ring and wedges. I'll be running off a batch of mouldings over the winter for those who want to update their boats, these will be available for the cost of materials.

Hi Neil
Just to confirm I would like a set. Love my Finn but I'm still a 1% at heart a (Horneteer),. But I'm now to big for a Hornet and the Finn fits beautifully (and it's not tight around the waist).
Cheers Al
