Lifting Finn rudder needed

Post by JonathanH »

Can anyone tell me where I can find a lifting rudder for my Finn? I've been using a fixed rudder for many years and have finally made the realisation that its a complete pain. I've already worn part of the tip off it and I'm fed up with suddenly finding myself grinding to a halt at the harbour mouth when I discover that the location of the sandbank has changed slightly since last year...

I think I can cope with the additional weight penalty, it'll hardly matter to my 1969 Raudaschl. In fact, it might improve my speed as I can glide effortlessly over that blasted sandbank. Any thoughts would be gratefully appreciated before another Summer of rudder chamfering beckons.

Thanks,

Jonathan

the finn lifting rudder - bit of a holy grail to find a decent one.

You can get them new, but are around £600.

Might be worth a post on the UK Finn site as they are out there, just a pain to find.

nice to know there's another Raudaschl around

Neil,

Thanks for the advice, especially from a member of the rather exclusive (small) Raudaschl owner's club. Judging by the £600 price tag for a new one it might be cheaper to dredge the sandbank that I'm trying to avoid! I might have to look into making a lifting rudder and then sell the design to the masses.

Thaks again,

Jonathan,
it is sometimes posible to convert your fixed blade into a lifting one by obtaining a suitable stock and cutting your blade to fit. You need to find one that has sufficient depth to it to allow the tiller to clear the deck whilst the blade is fully in the water.
I have one that I use which uses a Cee Vee stock which I acquired on ebay and modified to fit. I will endeavour to post a photo after the weekend if it may be of use.
A search for rudder stocks on the Pinnel and Bax website will show the various options, with the wish bone type also suitable for the Finn, and whilst not as expensive as the type Neil mentions, can often be found on ebay and adapted to work well.
I also had a Raudaschl as my first Finn and look forward to seeing you in the future, perhaps at one of our events, What is your sail number? as I can add you to my growing list of active classic Finns.

Brookesy,

An image of your lifting rudder would be really useful, thank you. I'll then head off in pursuit of a suitable stock to butcher. As regards my Raudaschl, its number is K333. It was previously owned, I believe, by a couple of members of the Bosham sailing club where they had (and probably still have) a strong Finn fleet. After their ownership K333 was then sold on to a chap in Rye from whom I purchased it, about 16 years ago. I stripped her down to bare wood and re-varnished her and that's the way I've kept her. I still regard the Raudaschl as being the most attractive Finn ever built although I'm sure many will take issue with me!

Best wishes,

Jonathan

No problems, I will post a couple pictures as soon as I can.
You are already on the Finn register and its great to know the boat is still active, and I do agree the Raudaschl is the best looking boat especially if the carvel built hull is left varnished in all its glory rather than painted, sadly a lot have been painted as the nails used in the construction corroded and blackened and stained the wood if they were not looked after.

Looks good painted - now can we compare and contrast with a varnished one, please?!

Me and my big mouth..., I'll try and scan some of my old photos, but they may be a bit fuzzy.
Neil's boat does look good though as the green contrasts well with the sapelle decks.

That is one lovely looking boat! I'm envious.....

Hold on...what am I saying...it's a finn.....have I ingested too many epoxy fumes?

Even allowing for that - it is still gorgeous and a lovely example.

There is certainly something about being able to see the planking that really does look good... Dunno which one my "best on the shore" ribbon would go on!

To get back on thread, here is a shortcut to the Pata lifting rudder which gives a good idea as to how to convert yours with a suitable stock. Outrageous price but I suppose it is carbon...
