Moth Mast for Best of Bristish

Post by Stephen Hawkins » Tue Mar 27, 2012 1:58 pm

All,

Looking for a reasonable second-hand mast for Chris's British Moth. His current one is old and very stiff, and the diamond halfway up is not helping matters. We have been advised to replace it with something softer - with spreaders.

We would prefer that the mast came from a British Moth, that has, perhaps, been upgraded, rather than from some other class. As we need to keep costs down. (i.e. Chris has to pay for it).

Also we would like a mast with as few drill holes in it as possible - so leave the fittings on it

Cheers

Steve,

A Firefly mast will also fit without moving the fittings - you just have to cut it to length as the mast is deck stepped. Only problem is that the hole where the jib halyard sheave was whistles, so needs to be taped up!

That is good to know Rupert. I'll keep that pne in my back pocket.

I am being cheeky, but I would rather have the rig off a working boat that is upgrading. However I have already had an offer of a Moth mast last weekend for free.

However, the spreaders have been removed and abd there is no standing rigging. And it is a long way away - Suffolk. These things tend to add up.

Anyway - we are not in any immediate hurry. Chris has a fair amount to get to grips with before the mast change makes much a difference.

Best bet for the moment might be to find some spreaders (I'll take a look at easter when clearing the shed...) and put them on the current mast, removing the diamonds. If you then get another, better, tube, you could transfer the rigging.

However, I agree a fully rigged mast would be a better option.

I believe Abby and Gary are planning to be at the Hunts cvrda meeting in a N12, if that helps at all?

Where and when is Hunts?

I am sure we can get somebody to pick them up.

I'll have to give it some thought.

Ah yes,

Hunts is in Cambridgeshire - which is the county next to Suffolk.

Its still a long way away.

Although I am rather keen to see this N12.

Meryl,

That is a very good idea. Not that I am about that weekend. But I am sure I can get someone to hold it for me.

Cheers

Stephen, No problem keeping a few bits at Chippenham club, if you can organise with Abby, I am only guessing that they are coming.

Ditto Roger if it of of any help.
