The problem with most old boats is finding somewhere to put the cleat. The ideal place is the thwart really, but this tends to be a bit busy already.

I think with a high tank boat the best compromise is to have a single deck bush in front of the mast through which both vangs pass attaching to a double block. Immediately under the deck bush you want a single pulley screwed to the hog, with guide pulleys on either side leading aft. The control line can then run from the cleat on the starboard side (Thwart) through the guide pulleys, round the system and out through the cleat on the port side.

That would be adequate for long poles, over engineered for 6 footers.

I have a cleat on the twart the line just keeps deciding to uncleat itself.
I think this could be solved with adding (well positioned) blocks but not sure.
