Proctor C section mast offcut

Post by Stephen Hawkins »

I am looking to extend a Proctor C section mast from the bottom.

I am looking for a section of the same mast type, from a bent/damaged/abandoned mast.

Unfortunately my club just had a clear out and chucked away all the abandoned masts, tucked round the back of the shed - doh!

A 2ft section off the bottom would give me plenty to play with although I would take a foot or so length with no complaints.

I am also looking for something to act as a sleeve for the join.

Cheers

Back in the day, Proctors would cut and sleeve C sections using a bit of C section (Depending on the extra stiffness required,) with the luff groove bits cleaned of and the edges file round and the flat bit at the back with a wide saw cut an engineering fit. This does not apply to you but for a D section the C section is an exact sleeve. A smear of araldite or similar epoxy and a couple of rivets each side of the join better then new! - Length of sleeve about 6" for your job. Good luck sourcing them in the old days Proctors would let you go through their scrap skips but I would guess Seldon are not so compliant!

There's a 12 mast down in the compound which may do you I'll check later today as to what section it is. the boat itself is long gone.

There are various old masts in varying states of knackeredness at Whitefriars - pop over and take a look, if you like - we will be there on Sunday. Can sell you a complete Lark for £50 if you come and take it away, complete with Proctor C mast!

Tony,

Let me know what type of mast it is, how long it is and what, if any, fittings are on it before you chop a bit off it

Rupert,

On duty Sunday, as Safety driver for Albacore Open, but it is due to finish early afternoon.

However, I might well pop round middle of the afternoon with my tape measure and hacksaw

Not sure what I would do with the Lark.....Its not one of those wobbly ones from the 70's is it?

But I have just been on the lark site to look at the measurements. I will compare them with what I have at home.

I am doing a couple of varnishing spot repairs on Sparkle at the moment - as result of being left out all winter. Hopefully she will be back at the club on Monday

Rupert the Lark Proctor C mast is very close to my old N12 mast.

If it measures, the height of the forestay sheave should be exactly the same as my current N12 mast i.e. 5075 from the base of the mast (MDP in Lark language)

In my Starfish N12, base of mast to sheer line 500mm + sheer line to top of jib sheave 4575mm

I would only have to move the boom mount up 10 cm and the top black band down 7cm and it would measure. Not sure what I would do with the rest of the boat.

But I will definitely pope round and have a look.

cheers

I took a look at the N12 mast, It has a damaged and repaired [and damaged again] top section above the hounds and it's silver. I don't know if it's a c section or not, there's nothing to indicate what it is apart from it being a proctor. It's certainly a smaller section than my Merlin mast [and smaller than the two Lark masts in the compound too]. I've got some photos, but tbh I don't think it's worth your bothering with unless you are totally and absolutely stuck.

I have a bent Solo C section with a 2m sleeve. The bend as always, is above where the sleeve ends...
Any use to you?
We will be heading from Essex to Salcombe next Friday.

Steve came and took a dead Lark off our hands at Whitefriars recently, so has aquired a mast now.

Solos at Salcombe sounds fun, though - one of the year's big bashes, I've heard?

Yes,

Thanks chaps. I have a Lark mast that will suffice.

The poor old hull was taken down the tip this very morning.

They were very good about it.

Stephen - what number was the Lark? The class register can then be updated with it's demise.
I like their entry for Lark 49 "Flower Pot" - No idea of racing history but the geraniums look great in season. The boat is being used as a giant flower pot and is in excellent condition for that purpose!

I think it was 1923 - It was a parker Lark. no name though.

Do you know anyone who might want its centre plate? Or centre main ratchety block swivelly cleaty doodad?

Not free but they will be very cheap.

It wouldn't be a blue centreplate by any chance?
