Looking for a single hander

Post by phil58490 » Sat Oct 31, 2015 10:47 pm

Hi all,
having moved house to Cornwall and sold all my boats before the move I am now looking for a CVRDA eligible single hander. I could find another Solo but having had five of those over the years and the fact that I will be only casual handicap racing I thought I would see what else is about.
It needs to be reasonably sound as I have limited time, space or skill to do any serious rebuilding and preferably within a couple of hours drive of Looe, Cornwall.
I keep looking for a Hit dinghy but haven't seen one for sale recently.

Any ideas, thanks.

More than 2 in the cvrda, I think!

For sailing at Looe, how about a ToY?

Looe only do class racing, Redwings, Enterprises, L*sers and Mirrors, I am gradually moving towards keel boats but fancy something to handicap race somewhere else, I did think about single handing a Mirror but I don't think it is really for me.

A Toy, I hadn't given them a thought, I've never sailed a planker but it might be kinder on aged knees than a hiking dinghy.

Hi Phil
Come up and sail at Roadford you would be most welcome. Depending on your size get a Finn.

There was a TOY advertised on the notice board at Roadford earlier - don't know if it sold.
My daughter Amy is enjoying sailing hers and would enjoy some competition in the CVRDA if there was a second one arround.

Anyone who frequents Roadford know if it is still for sale?

Phil,

I would certainly give the ToY a goodly look, for they were a far better boat than many would give it credit for. When the ToY was launched it really was at the leading edge of dinghy development. As a class it grew up to the point that they were holding Europeans - the boat was popular on both sides of the North Sea. Give them flat water and a bit of a reach and to quote the Beach Boys, you'll be having 'Fun Fun Fun'.

The arrival of the Contender, finally crowned as the IYRU choice for the new international single hander, and then the realisation that you really could sail a boat single handed from the trapeze would dent the long term future for the ToY - and then the global phenomena that was the Laser slowly but surely consigned the planker to the history books. Today, in terms of the smile/£ equation they're a fun buy, CVRDA legal...and if you sail is shot, you just use a Solo mainsail (of which there are always plenty) as they are one and the same!

Enjoy
