Tiller extension needed

Post by XQSME »

Afternoon all.
My 33 inch tiller extension needs replacing , with a as close as possible length match and a decent "almost universal" joint which won't allow the extension to drop below horizontal..

Anything out there?

Use the old bamboo!!

Cut the end firings of the previous extension if available and use them. Otherwise, by one of the rubber swan neck type e.g. Allen-AL5198 and use that. You will need to select bamboo that fits over (or can be made to fit over) the rubber plug part of the joint. They are stiff enough to stop the extension going below horizontal unless forced down - and if it was being forced down then any other type of joint would probably be breaking the tiller or the extension.

I have used bamboo and it works well but is inclined to split.

Best thing is to wrap wipping twine around the stress areas, just like a fishing rod. Then works well.

Best wishes

33 ins isn't long enough for an Albacore if you intend to sit out and steer at the same time . I use a 48 inch extension over a 4 foot tiller and find that covers most eventualities Certainly not less than 1 metre E bay is a happy hunting ground
