Centreboard winch for vintage Uffa Fox Fourteen

Post by Aquarius »

Galatea K 478 was "modernised" at some point - the centreboard was "de-ballasted" and the bronze differential winch removed and replaced with a modern type tackle. I hope to "restore" her to her 1946 condition.

Anyone using one for a door stop, etc?

Photo shows where the original one went...

(And whoever led the kicking strap to that lacing eye was wildly optimistic given the size of a Fourteen's mainsail!

I certainly have a large bronze drum which was part of a winch, not sure if there's the rest of it but I'm sure there is a spindle and some sort of bracket somewhere. I'll search them out.

I certainly have one winch with drum.....and I suspect a couple of free drums.

But they are not all absolutely identical.....what dimensions is the hog that would take the saddle of the winch?

Mine are all down in Cornwall, although could get it up to Clywedog next week...

Thanks. I feared that such might be the case (and I just spotted the ghastly pun, as the winch goes on the forward extension of the centrecase - sorry!).

I will measure as carefully as I can, and get back to you.

In terms of urgency, this is quite a way below "strip and re-varnish the whole boat", which will start tomorrow. Since the winch won't work until I have cast the lead back into the centreboard, I suspect that this will be a 2018 project.
